(Feb 15th) It seems like a long time since a Crimea single was released. The band have been busy with gigs internationally, including picking up a distribution deal in China, but now return with news that a track of theirs has been picked up for use in TV and web advertisements for Trident chewing gum.

The upshot is that the track (and a couple of b-sides, and a selection of remixes) are freely available from various online sources. I'll be sticking to the radio edit / b-sides here, but the Ricardo Autobahn remix is quite listenable, if only because it doesn't change much — and I recommend his Spray side-project with Jenny McLaren, the second album of which should hopefully get a CD release this year.

Loop a Loop has a little of the vibe of Cliff Richards' Summer Holiday — light and breezy sunshine music, humming along nicely until you notice what Davey's singing. Unsurprisingly the advert sticks to the "wanna start again, be a kid again" refrain and the pleasant humming, but the company are happy to host the original in all its glory.

Can't Forget You Girl borrows the piano bridge from The Great Unknown and sets to it a simple ethereal verse. Gentle and relaxing, which is why I'm assuming this one would follow Loop a Loop as the second track if this were a CD release; it has more in common with the lead track than Stoned — which originally demoed as Down On The Farm and is unchanged here, a hangover in poetry set to music. Somewhat on the same theme as the Wildhearts' Why You Lie, "the hand that rocks the cradle asks why" adding a note of castigation and a hint of the wild, tremulous building sound from Weird and other songs is present over the chorus.

Whole Wide World was released a day or two later, a cover version of the classic song that would sound at home in the Saigon of Apocalypse Now — low key but throaty and thunderous background sounds, quavering guitars, and generally a well done example of what cover versions can add to a piece.

So, a traditional Crimea single release harking back to the first releases of Lottery Winners on Acid and Baby Boom; a radio-friendly lead track with slightly subversive lyrics and some more subdued accompanying tunes. Recommended. Maybe we'll get Bombay Sapphire Coma or Light Brigade as a follow-up single?

Loop a Loop

Wanna start again, be a kid again,
'Cause baby I'm not that person you pretend.

CHORUS:

Damn girl gone loop,
Loop a loop a loop.
Loop a loop a loop a loo.
Damn girl gone loop,
Loop a loop a loop.
Loop a loop a loop a loo.

Wanna start again, wanna change my name,
'Cause baby I'm not an angel
You cannot be saved.

CHORUS

Just like Hamburger Hill...

Throw another small child on the fire.
I'm trying to build an empire.
One steps forward, baby, two steps back,
Moonwalking beneath that harlot's flat.

Damn world gone loop,
Loop a loop a loop a loop a loo.
Damn world gone loop loop a loop a loo,
Loop a loop a loop a loo.
As we fall through the hoops
Going loop a loop.
As we fall through the hoops
Going looooooooop.

Can't Forget You Girl You still clutch the good book to your bosom Still drowning in an ocean of tranquility Lost in supercalifragilistic ecstasy Always something missing in my world I can't forget you girl Do [repeat verse] Do [repeat verse]
Stoned Down on the farm There's people in white coats Sticking needles in your arm Whilst you were sleeping Amateur surgeons Came and stole your innocence An awkward silence Hangs like a traitor The shooting starts The shooting ends Over the moon Under the influence Immortal soon CHORUS: Why d'you have to Why d'you have to Always have to Always be so stoned The hand that rocks the cradle asks why CHORUS Tired of the fighting Tired of just being Tired of trying to stay alive Losing brain cells With total abandon Like it's going out of fashion Down on the farm Nothing is normal Can't feel your fingers anymore Over the moon Under the influence Immortal soon CHORUS (x4)
Whole Wide World When I was a young boy, my momma said to me: There's only one girl in the world for you And she probably lives in Tahiti I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world Just to find her Or maybe she's from the Bahamas Where the Caribbean sea is blue Weepin' away in the tropical night Because nobody's told her 'bout you I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world To find out where they hide her Why am I hanging around in the rain out here Tryin' to pick up a girl Why are my eyes fillin' up with these lonely tears When there's girls all over the world? I should be lying on a tropical beach with her Caressing her warm brown skin And then in a year or maybe not quite We'll be sharing the same next of kin CHORUS: I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world Just to find her I'd go the whole wide world I'd go the whole wide world To find out where they hide her CHORUS
