◄ My review: The Keys - From Tense to Loose to Slack (single)
When I first listened to single-opener Dawn Of Man I thought I'd mistakenly put on a Wildhearts CD. Twenty-five seconds later this notion was firmly disabused, but the favourable comparison remains. Dawn Of Man is noticeably more 'rock' than previous recordings; the guitars sound great, and that's not to suggest anything else is lacking. There's also a theme apparent running through the lyrics in each of these songs— they could all easily be paeans from the same (ex-) altar girl to the same object of lust.
Having heard the radio session tracks on a taped copy, their release here is very welcome. Hopefully, the other original song played then—Shoot 'Em In The Head—will be included on a future single or album. Closed To Sin is the slower of the two used here, even so being replete with crushing drums and precise effects. Rising from reflective to brazen and smoothly back and forth, it's in turns haunting, shouted and sweet.
Baptist Boy takes this bouncing rhythm to another level, confidently stomping and swaggering along, leaving you wanting more. Capturing the live feel of a band such as this is no mean feat, but it's been expertly done... the Puppies just keep getting better; gratifyingly, so does the quality of their releases, with this Cadiz Records offering being no exception. Here's hoping for an album very soon.
DAWN OF MAN
If you want to fan the fire
Or if you're waiting to expire
If you wanted wine instead of water
...place your hand in mine
If Jesus had a blue-eyed daughter
...place your hand in mineCHORUS:
Mine's a song; a (pure) song
The only song I've had
Since the dawn of man
I've had a good look around
You're the best that I've found
Oh... so put your hand in mineIf you want to tie the noose
...place your hand in mine
Or if you want the gospel truth
...place your hand in mine
If you want an empty cellar
...place your hand in mine
Or if you want (a number, fella)
...place your hand in mineCHORUS
Since the dawn of man...
CLOSED TO SIN
My friends are gone... gone to bed...
I should be there, but I'm here instead...
God won't wake me, love can't save me...I'm all alone, with my (TV set)...
It's telling me secrets, that no-one (gets)...
Love will save me, God can shape me...
Shape me... into something new...
Someone who's sleeping with you...
Real life... in slow motion...My door was closed, closed to sin...
But now if it calls I will let it in...I once had a good name...
But now it's clothed in shame...
I drown myself in cheap thrills...
My belly it rattles with different pills...
But they don't help me...
They don't help me... help me...
Now I don't have you...I guess I'll just have to deal...
With... life... in slow motion... slow motion...Ba-ba-da... ba-ba-da...
Ba-ba-da... ba-ba-da...My friends have gone... gone to bed...
I should be there, but I'm here instead...
God won't wake me, love can't save me.
BAPTIST BOY
Is that your girl?
With the slicked back hair?
And the push up bra?
Well I don't care
I wanna cut your hair
I wanna say your prayer
My baptist boy
With the rabid stareCHORUS:
Ooooooh! Suddenly...
A big black cloud
Has come my way
It's here to stay
So give yourself to sin
Let it in let it in let it inI curse his town
Every night and day
From drunk old men
to the newborn babes
??????? (plus yellow grease)
???????
(On the Errol Flyn plinth)CHORUS (x2)
