Site Updates
2nd September 2008Minor skin refresh, fixed some 404 problems, little tweaks to images and infomation in places. Switched the site back to having document extensions some time ago, at the same time ditching the 'all offsite links open in a new window/tab' javascript.

The write-up of last year in Poland starts here for Puławy and here for Miętne.
There's also a light smattering of photos to go with, and older galleries have been retrofitted with a slightly tweaked lightbox; see lokeshdhakar.com for technical details. Edit: Lightbox 2 seems to have issues with other things here. Lytebox hopefully doesn't.
Information for people looking to go this year is also available.

I've added a brand-new phrase booklet of Survival Polish — a write up and some photos of 2007 are still coming, for people who might be going this year to the places we went.
Slight tweak to the site design to make it look better at higher resolutions. More to do.

A bunch of backdated blog entries have been added, about things such as external harddrives, magazine closure, replacing computers and reviewing music. Yes, I did write the first WotC entry back at the start of June. It was prophetic, unfortunately.
Stuff about July/August to be added eventually. Stuff about the Transformers movie to be added if I can think of anything to say beyond "Yeah, it was an alright action adventure type flick with lots of unexpected nice touches but almost nil characterisation."

To coin a phrase: whoops. It appears that I inadvertently managed to break all of my site feedback forms from the start of February through to now. If you tried to leave a guestbook or weblog comment during that time, grovelling apologies. If you tried to get in touch via the contact form and see this and happen to remember what it was you wanted, please resend. And also grovelling apologies.
"How did he do that?" Well, it turns out that mod_rewrite can only pass data received via GET, but its voodoo is low enough level that form actions get rewritten by it. So if, say, your form points to "thing.php" but "thing.php" resolves peacefully in a browser to "thing" then "thing.php" no longer has a REQUEST_METHOD of POST or any form data by the time it gets called. Which does nothing with the guestbook and weblog except send you back to where you were, but at least it's obvious nothing has happened. The contact form, on the other hand, is aware that someone has tried to send something... but because there's invalid form data assumes that it's being attacked by a automated spam process, and forwards to the "this has sent" page anyway.
And of course the mod_rewrite stuff was added after the big site changes in January, when I thought to test the forms. Should've tested them again separately.
(The "Listening to" box of Suicide Club [2002] currently in the column on the right has nothing to do with any of this. I'm listening to MP3s of the soundtrack, which was never officially released but can be be downloaded from here. It's an interesting film.)

Yeah, the redesign is why January's blog entries have all been added in together.
Felt it was time for a change: less cramped text, wider margins, etc. There's been some moving around of pages, and a bit finally excised... nothing major's gone walkabout. Some articles moved into the blog, sections simplified, and a few accessibility concerns addressed.
To do: make something out of the "books" section.

Expanded the index and FAQ I'd written for APASS in the process of helping my sister think of things for this summer. The phrase sheet will also be updated at some point, as she's studying Polish as part of her degree now.
The site has switched back to HTML 4.01, which is basically due to XHTML offering no significant advantages, a few possible drawbacks and the probable future of HTML. It's no less possible to write disciplined semantic markup with HTML 4.01, it's an equally valid milestone to code around, and the XHTML site served its purpose in forcing me to tidy up the tag soup code here before.
It's a real shame the Strict DOCTYPEs for HTML and XHTML don't permit inlined frames.
14th November 2005
Decent-sized update, including some code changes to provide categorisation for blog entries and extend spam protection to comments there. Music reviews move to be stored chronologically, and there's a script to provide clean printed output, as well as a few other small tools mostly for me when I'm debugging.
Poland is finally written up, which you can find backdated into the APASS 2005 category. Somewhat over 22,000 words later, I can't shake the feeling I've left a lot of things out... don't be surprised if a few extra paragraphs get sneaked in. The first entry is just text, but photos come into it soon enough.
